Mason, the eighth Kentucky county, was created by the Virginia legislature in 1788 from part of Bourbon County. It is named for George Mason. Maysville is the county seat. The Mason County Clerk, whose duties are numerous and diverse, records and maintains various legal instruments and Fiscal Court records.
